Legacy 2M Simplex Net returns - Piedmont 2M Simplex Net

Post by admin »

.
Over a decade ago, a dedicated group of area hams had a nightly 2M Simplex rag chew and on Sunday nights there was the Piedmont 2M Simplex Net on 147.505 Mhz. The participation was very good for the rag chew and Net. The Piedmont Simplex Net went into hibernation December 2021.

Well, we're bringing it back! The Piedmont 2M Simplex Net will restart soon on 146.500 Mhz (alt 146.550), tentatively Friday nights at 8:00 PM. The Net Control Ops will be a mix of legacy 2M Simplex Elmers and newly minted hams. The Piedmont 2M Simplex Net will give area hams the opportunity to stretch their legs and gain confidence in their comms sans repeaters.

Many are addicted to the crutch of area repeaters ;) You need to understand your local radio capabilities without the man-in-the-middle. Do you know how you will or can communicate more than a couple miles without a repeater? We do!

As an example - on August 7, 2016 to Mint Hill NC, area 2M simplex operators checked in from -
North Charlotte
Harrisburg
South Charlotte
Concord
West Charlotte
Rockwell
Fort Mill, SC
Lake Wylie, SC
Ellenboro
Newton
Gastonia
Chester, SC

We have dozens of logs from previous Nets and these check-ins were reliable from week-to-week. You can do it, too!

Look for further announcements with Dates and Times.

Excellent! Simplex nets are very useful and I'm glad this one is hitting the airwaves.

Thanks to all for putting this together!

I totally forgot about it Friday. Next week if everyone is not too busy with field day stuff, I will try to get in. I’m a good ways away from the charlotte area so simplex may be tough. I do have a pretty good view that way. Leaves on the trees hurt it too. My 2m ssb group has seen a drop in signal strength since spring, but it’s like that every year.

No doubt conditions are much better when the leaves are off the trees. Anyone that joins us in summer will be pleasantly surprised in the fall.

I let the guys in my ssb group know about it as well. Most are in the Greensboro, High Point, Kernersville areas. Hope to get you some more participation from the center of the state.

The thing to be aware of is that this is a 2M FM Simplex operation and antennas are expected to be vertical polarization. The point of the simplex net is to make majority of those using common 2M radios aware of simplex operation. Few operators have 2M SSB capability these days. While I have 2M SSB capability, my 15 element Yagi is vertical for regional FM.

We all also have vertically polarized antennas. Good to point out that on vhf and up that ssb operators have horizontal antennas and for fm a vertically polarized antenna is used. You will be very disappointed in performance when trying to use the wrong one. You need to match the antenna to the mode.
